For example, say a man was named 4 CONT Cornelis Pieterszen. You would know immediately that Cornelis' father's 4 CONT first name was "Pieter". In 1663 on the ship "The Rosetree" two 4 CONT brothers came to New Netherland with their families. They came from the 4 CONT village of Over Pelt in the Prince Bishopric of Liege (now in Belgium). 4 CONT In Europe their family used the surname Lanen. Their father's name was 4 CONT Jan. The first wife of Mattys was a woman 4 CONT named "Maryken Guisberts" (Mary, the daughter of Gilbert -- giving the 4 CONT Dutch names their English equivalents). Gisbert had been born on 2 Dec 4 CONT 1646 in the village of Tuil, Gelderland Province, of the Netherlands, and 4 CONT he was the eldest child of Mattys and Maryken. 4 CONT 4 CONT In the New World Gisbert Tyssen Lanen -- "Tys" is the nickname of his 4 CONT father's name, Mattys -- married Jannetje Adriaens Smith. (The Smith 4 CONT family had come to America on the same ship, "The Rosetree", in 1663.) 4 CONT Gisbert and Jannetje moved to New Jersey where most of their descendants 4 CONT adopted the surname LANE. They have 4 CONT also been reprinted elsewhere. Here are the listings of the two VAN PELT 4 CONT families: 4 CONT 4 CONT "Teunis Jansen, from the country of Liege, wife and six children, 18, 16, 4 CONT 14, 9, 7, and 2 years old." 4 CONT 4 CONT and Teunis' brother's family: 4 CONT 4 CONT "Thys Jansen, from the country of Liege, and four children, 17, 15, 13, 4 CONT and 11 years old." 4 CONT 4 CONT You appear to be taking the details of this family from A. Van Doren 4 CONT Honeyman's account published in volume 2 of his "Somerset County 4 CONT Historical Quarterly" (April 1913). 4 CONT 4 CONT Some of his information is in error, e.g. the named of Mattys Janszen 4 CONT Lanen Van Pelt's first wife -- the one who died on the voyage and was 4 CONT buried at Texel -- was NOT "Tryntje" (as Honeyman had speculated) but 4 CONT Maryken Gisberts. The name "Gisbert" came into the Lane family when 4 CONT Mattys Jansen and Maryken Gisberts named their son in honor of his 4 CONT maternal grandfather. 4 CONT 4 CONT The date of Mattys' marriage was 1 Nov 1640 in the village of Tuil, 4 CONT Gelderland Province, The Netherlands: 4 CONT 4 CONT "Mattijs Pelt, soldier under Captain De Swart, and Maryken Gijberts, young 4 CONT daughter of Buermalsen." 4 CONT 4 CONT I am forwarding the message that I sent to you and the list on December 4 CONT 6th last year as I had already commented on the use of patronymics at that 4 CONT time. 4 CONT 4 CONT It may be well to remember that the surname GIBERSON could derive from 4 CONT *any* man with the given name Gisbert/Gilbert. In earlier times they used the patronymic 4 CONT naming system in which a child took his or her father's first name -- 4 CONT given name -- in its possessive form. For example, say a man was named 4 CONT Cornelis Pieterszen. You would know immediately that Cornelis' father's 4 CONT first name was "Pieter". Let us say that Cornelis had a daughter Sara and 4 CONT a son Jan. Sara would be called "Sara Cornelis" and Jan would be called 4 CONT "Jan Corneliszen". 4 CONT 4 CONT And now to your specific case. So the two brothers were called "Teunis Janszen Lanen van Pelt" and 4 CONT "Mattys Janszen Lanen van Pelt". Their sons would have had the patronymic 4 CONT "Gisbertson". 4 CONT 4 CONT Most of the descendants of Mattys' brother, Teunis Janszen Lanen Van Pelt, 4 CONT adopted the surname VAN PELT. During the last six years of the reign of Edward II, it i 2 CONC s recorded that half the baronage of England were butchered, imprisoned, or banished by the k 2 CONC ing in the course of the struggle against the king's favourites. The popular party was howeve 2 CONC r now reinforced by the Queen Isabella and the Prince of Wales, who were everywhere welcome 2 CONC d as the deliverers of the kingdom. Eeanor of Aquitaine, one of the r 2 CONC ichest women in Europe was divorced from her husband, Louis VII, King of France, and marrie 2 CONC d a certain Henry Plantagenet. From the point of view of the King of France there could hav 2 CONC e been no worse alliance. This Henry Plantagenet had recently had recently inherited Maine, T 2 CONC ouraine and Anjou from his father, and was already both Duke of Normandy and Suzerain of Brit 2 CONC tany. 1154, on the death of King Stephen, Henry became King Henry II of England. The amalgama 2 CONC tion of their territories into what was to become the Angevin empire, the glory of Plantagene 2 CONC ts, would provoke the virtue of inter-nationalism and the vice of conflict, between England a 2 CONC nd France for the next three centuries. Henry II (of England) (1133-89), King of England (11 2 CONC 54-89), first monarch of the house of Anjou, or Plantagenet, an important administrative refo 2 CONC rmer, who was one of the most powerful European rulers of his time. Born March 5, 1133, at L 2 CONC e Mans, France, Henry became Duke of Normandy in 1151. The following year, on the death of hi 2 CONC s father, he inherited the Angevin territories in France. By his marriage in 1152 to Eleano 2 CONC r of Aquitaine, Henry added vast territories in southwestern France to his possessions. Henry 2 CONC claimed the English kingship through his mother, Matilda. She had been designated the heires 2 CONC s of Henry I but had been deprived of the succession by her cousin, Stephen of Blois, who mad 2 CONC e himself king. In 1153 Henry defeated Stephen's armies in England and compelled the king t 2 CONC o choose him as his successor; on Stephen's death, the following year, Henry became king. Dur 2 CONC ing the first few years of his reign Henry quelled the disorders that had developed during St 2 CONC ephen's reign, regained the northern counties of England, which had previously been ceded t 2 CONC o Scotland, and conquered North Wales. In 1171-72 he began the Norman conquest of Ireland an 2 CONC d in 1174 forced William the Lion, King of the Scots, to recognize him as overlord. In 116 2 CONC 4 Henry became involved in a quarrel with Thomas Becket, whom he had appointed archbishop o 2 CONC f Canterbury. By the Constitutions of Clarendon, the King decreed that priests accused of cri 2 CONC mes should be tried in royal courts; Becket claimed that such cases should be handled by eccl 2 CONC esiastical courts, and the controversy that followed ended in 1170 with Becket's murder by fo 2 CONC ur of Henry's knights. Widespread indignation over the murder forced the king to rescind hi 2 CONC s decree and recognize Becket as a martyr. Although he failed to subject the church to his c 2 CONC ourts, Henry's judicial reforms were of lasting significance. In England he established a cen 2 CONC tralized system of justice accessible to all freemen and administered by judges who travele 2 CONC d around the country at regular intervals. He also began the process of replacing the old tri 2 CONC al by ordeal with modern court procedures. From the beginning of his reign, Henry was involv 2 CONC ed in conflict with Louis VII, King of France, and later with Louis's successor, Philip II, o 2 CONC ver the French provinces that Henry claimed. A succession of rebellions against Henry, heade 2 CONC d by his sons and furthered by Philip II and by Eleanor of Aquitaine, began in 1173 and conti 2 CONC nued until his death at Chinon, France, on July 6, 1189.
